Antibiotic-resistant staph gain foothold
Infections once seen only in hospitals have doctors taking a second look
The bacteria are called Staphylococcus aureus, or staph for short. Staph are the most common cause of skin infections like boils and can also cause lung infections, bloodstream infections and abscesses in the body's internal organs.
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus
In the past, most serious staph bacteria infections were treated with a certain type of antibiotic related to penicillin. Over the past 50 years, treatment of these infections has become more difficult because staph bacteria have become resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used penicillin-related antibiotics (1). These resistant bacteria are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.
Efforts to Contain Infection Criticized; Call for measures to halt staph outbreak in county jails.
Staph infections, which cause painful boils and skin abscesses, are spread by skin-to-skin contact or shared personal items. The bacterium that causes the infections has gained a foothold in the jail system's crowded, and sometimes unsanitary, conditions, officials say.
